 Writing a college level essay can be one of the most challenging tasks students have to do. Essay writing is a dreaded assignment for many students. The problem is often more psychological that technical however. Many students get hung up on the topic and often times don’t know where to start their essay. However, by using a few college essay writing tips, the process of writing the essay becomes easier. One important thing about an essay is its layout. The layout of an essay is really rather easy. You simply:

1) Introduce the essay and tell the reader what you will talk about in the essay.

2) Write paragraphs talking about what you introduced to the reader in the first paragraph.

3) The final paragraph should be a conclusion paragraph telling the reader what you just told them.

Before starting an essay, it’s always a good idea to make an outline. This is one of the best college essay writing tips out there. An outline will be like a roadmap for your essay. Once you have the outline in place, you can start writing the essay. I use an iPad for all of my writing and I recently found a great app called Outline Pro. What’s cool about it is that it helps you outline an essay using the same technique that I outlined above. When you have the outline complete, it allows you to write a paragraph in each outline item. This breaks the outlining and essay writing process down considerably and makes it really easy to do.

One of my favorite college essay writing tips focuses on getting the words out of my head and into my iPad. If I’m writing an essay about a topic that I care about, it’s usually pretty easy to get started. Sometimes I just need to do a little free flow writing to get warmed up and then the words flow easily. Free flow writing is sitting down and writing whatever is in your mind, regardless of whether it makes sense or not. This is an extremely helpful technique and gets you past the writer’s block phase of your paper. I find that when I get some words coming out of my head onto that paper or into my iPad, the rest start to flow naturally.

If you’re writing an essay about a topic that really doesn’t interest you, the process can be a bit more complicated. You should make sure to research your topic so when you do write about it, you’re giving correct information. Try to find some aspect of your topic that interests you and focus on that. It’ll make the writing process a little easier.

 

Of course, when you are through writing your essay, you’ll need to proofread and edit it. This the part most professors and teachers focus most on. They may not be experts in the topic you are discussing in your essay, but they’ll be pretty good at checking your grammar and writing. They want to see that your thoughts have been well organized and expressed through your writing in an easy to follow and understand way. One tool that I use online to do this is called Writing Dynamo. This tool checks my grammar and sentence structure to make sure it all makes sense and is easy to ready. It also checks spelling, but I don’t use that feature since my writing app on the iPad has spellcheck.
